FASHION MAKEUP FOR THE RAFFLES COLLEGE OF DESIGN & COMMERCE

I have always had an eye on raffles college of design and commerce. so, when I was asked to be a part of the fashion design major project shoot this month, I was very keen!
As a makeup artist, I have noticed 'high fashion' makeup is often about immaculate skin and 'barely there' makeup, depending on the type of theme the designer is going for.

Hair and Makeup team (from left to right): Wika Arifin, Glynis Coombes, Hanna Wahab and Rachel Hodgens

The brief for the makeup team was to achieve a light and 'barely there' makeup with emphasis on either the eyes or just cheek colour and dewy skin. This was achieved by using pink based colours for the eyes and cheeks and incorporating strobing into the look.
The hair team's brief was to create textured braided up-dos with loose strands at the front. This was achieved by creating fishtail braids and placing these in an up-style so the hair was off the face, making the clothes the main focus.

My makeup station

Before and After: Model - Alex Wallace | Makeup - Yours truly (Amnah Khan)

PRODUCTS USED:
Cleanse - Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water
Primer - Maybelline Master Prime by Facestudio in the 'Blur + Smooth'
Foundation - MAC Studio Fix Fluid
Concealer - BYS Conceal and Correct Palette '01 Camouflage'
Eyes - BYS 48 Eyeshadow Palette Intense Pigments and BYS Nudes 2 Eyeshadow Palette
Lips - Maybelline Superstay Mega Watt in 'Burst of Coral 455'
Highlight - BYS Highlighting Palette in '01 Radiance'
Set - MAC Prep + Prime Fix +

I started off with a matte base on the eye and then layered on the coral colours to create a slight smokey effect. I applied highlight to the inner eye to soften the look. I used the same eyeshadows as the colour on the cheek to ensure the overall look was uniform.

OVERVIEW OF THE DAY:
It's important to always talk over the brief you have been given and what is expected of you as a makeup artist so there is no misunderstanding or surprises with the design concept. I had discussed with Crystal, the shoot supervisor, what she wanted from me. She stated that she didn't mind me playing around with the look, so long as it was 'barely there' and dewy.
This year, I participated in a Rae Morris masterclass - 'Inside the World of Fashion Makeup' - and I incorporated what I learnt in my look on my model. It's important to think back to the lessons you've learnt in the past and always be professional.

TIP #1: Critique your work.
When I had finished the makeup, I asked Crystal to critique my work and see whether she wanted anything altered. She was very happy, but wanted more colour on the cheeks which I simply boosted with more shadow.

Hair Stylist: Hanna Wahab

TIP #2: Test the makeup
Ask the photographer in charge of the shoot to take a couple of practice shots for you to see how the makeup comes up in the photographs. The lighting in the studio is usually different to the lighting where you applied the makeup. It's important to re-evaluate your work under the new conditions and alter it accordingly.

TIP #3: Continually touch up!
After every outfit change, I made sure the model's makeup was in place. You will be on your feet CONSTANTLY on a job, so remember to wear comfy shoes!

My day at the Raffles College was a long and tiring one, but definitely worth being involved in. When you start getting involved in different projects like runway, theatre or fashion you learn more about how each one works.

For any students considering being involved in such projects, they should definitely put their hand up for work experience like this!
