Colour correction! How many of us actually know what that is?
FIRST STEP - Skincare!
If you have issues with dull skin or redness you should invest in a good skincare routine that caters to just that. For brightening, look for a good exfoliate with AHA and for redness there are moisturizers that help with settling your skin that are hypoallergenic.
SECOND STEP - Understand Your Skin Tone
When you look at your skin, what do you see? Redness? Yellow tones? Dark circles under your eyes?
THIRD STEP - Colour Correcting
THIRD STEP - Colour Correcting
In order to neutralize discoloration in your skin you need to have a good look at the colour wheel. When we look at the colour wheel we notice the spectrum of shades and also primary colours across complementary colours. To neutralize discolouration you use the shade on the opposite side of the colour wheel.
BASIC OVERVIEW
Green - For redness
Purple - Mutes yellow undertones
Yellow - Brightens dark circles and neutralises purple tones
Orange - Neutralises blue tones
FINAL STEP - Understand Your Skin's Undertone
Now, we have all been in the position where we have purchased foundations in a rush or perhaps under the wrong light to only find out later, and usually in horrid photos of the past, that we were rather patchy.
When You Look At Your Skin What Do You See?
Cool - Pink, red or blueish tones
Warm - Yellow, peachy or golden tones
Neutral - A mix of cool and warm tones
Vein-Check!
When you look at your veins are they blue or green? Your skin affects the colour your veins look. If your veins look blue then you are cool toned. If your veins look green then you are warm toned.

P.S. - Blend Blend Blend
For those who like to go shades darker than their natural skin colour need to understand that they SHOULD blend their foundation further down their neckline in order to even out your look. For those who want to brighten their skin tone by going shades lighter need to understand that if you go 'too light' then you may start to look ashy (grey toned). Essentially, always blend your makeup down your neckline.
